About Mount Melleray Scout Centre

Mount Melleray Scout Activity and Sport Centre lies high in the Knockmealdown Mountains 7 km’s outside the town of Cappoquin, County Waterford (in Scouting Ireland’s Waterford Scout County). Originally a boarding school attached to the Abbey of Mount Melleray it was acquired by the Catholic Boy Scouts of Ireland in 1979 and opened as a Scout Centre.

Since then the Scout Centre has been continuously improved and now offers you the opportunity to run a very active and varied programme for “Scouts” of every age. With hills and mountains at our back door and a glen with river and forest nearby, it is an ideal Scouting location. It is an exciting activity base for all, from the smallest Beaver to the most experienced Venturer.

Meet the Team - Staff & Crew

The Staff and Volunteers at Mount Melleray Scout Centre are one of the most important parts of the continued success and growth of this scouting paradise. Led by Camp Chief Pat O’Connor, Centre Manager Sonya Byrne and the centres dedicated workers they all ensure that every member of the team work towards making every part of your experience here second to none.

Mount Melleray is staffed by Volunteer Crews at weekends. A Warden is on site in a voluntary capacity. We have 10 crews usually of 6-8 members each. They assist to the needs of Groups staying at the centre. These crews are made up of scouts, venture and adult scouters. Mount Melleray’s crews can provide all your meals during the course of your stay, from supper on Friday night to lunch on Sunday. They ensure that your stay in Mount Melleray is enjoyable and pleasant.

Having been coming to Melleray since I was knee high to a grasshopper, as a cub all the way through to a scout and Venturer Leader, I can honestly say that it is one of my favourite locations for scouting. If it is a weekend hiking with your troop, an annual camp with a varied programme or a venture chill weekend, Melleray can cater for them all! We in Ballygunner make use of the centre through all sections at county, group and section level for Annual Camps, Crewing Weekends and have always enjoyed our visits to the centre.
